Schitt’s Creek en comedia, Watchmen en la categoría de miniseries y Succession en drama han sido las grandes triunfadoras de los 72º premios Emmy, marcada por la crisis del coronavirus. La gala más famosa de la televisión fue una mezcla entre lo presencial -con Jimmy Kimmel presentando en directo desde un Staples Center sin público- y el teletrabajo de los nominados, en remoto desde sus 130 casas esperando agradecer el galardón, desde el sofá o el jardín de su casa.

Cate Blanchett, Jennifer Aniston, Brian Cox, Meryl Streep, Jason Bateman, los actores de Succession, Schitt’s Creek, Watchmen o The marvelous Mrs. Maisel solo se han visto desde una pantalla de ordenador en una gala que apuesta por la diversidad y que busca a la protagonista de las series en un mundo post-Juego de tronos.

El evento comenzó una hora antes de la ceremonia de entrega de estatuillas, con una previa conducida por Ileana Rodríguez y Lety Sahagun, que contó con juegos, entrevistas y trivias. Jimmy Kimmel fue el anfitrión del evento, que se realizó en el Staples Center de Los Ángeles.

Al comienzo de la ceremonia, el monólogo de apertura de Jimmy Kimmel estuvo acompañado por aplausos y risas extraídas de entregas anteriores desde el Staples Center, para simular la presencia de otras personas.

La primera figura en aparecer en escena para acompañar al anfitrión fue Jennifer Aniston, quien roció con alcohol el sobre que contenía el nombre del primer ganador de la noche, con el objetivo de “desinfectarlo”, y lo quemó. La actriz tomó un extintor para apagar el fuego y así darle inicio formalmente a la entrega de galardones.
